Dr. David Littman, a famous cardiologist, inventor, and Harvard Medical School professor, greatly improved the acoustic qualities of stethoscopes in 1963. He believed it was vital to have a stethoscope with two chestpieces, an open one used to hear low pitch sounds and a closed, flat chestpiece to pick up higher pitched sounds. His ideas enabled doctors to get quicker, more accurate readings on patient?s internal body sounds. Instead of only being able to hear low or high-pitched sounds exclusively, doctors were able to listen to both frequencies with one stethoscope. Littman Stethoscopes have evolved dramatically over the years. Littman Stethoscopes are great for general physical assessment and for cardiology.

There are many types of Littman stethoscopes on the market. 3M bought Dr. Littman?s Cardiosonics, Inc. company in 1967, keeping the doctor on as a consultant and designer. There are now standard acoustic Littman stethoscopes as well as newer electronic models that provide even greater amplification. One of the greatest improvements on the original design was the advent of the tunable stethoscope. A tunable stethoscope features the diaphragm and bell on one chestpiece instead of two. The doctor can lightly press the chestpiece to the patient?s skin to use the bell to hear low frequency sounds. Doctors who want to listen for high frequency sound apply more pressure to the chestpiece, which flattens it and makes a traditional diaphragm.

Littman stethoscopes are widely used by cardiologists and other specialists who need the maximum amount of accuracy and sound amplification from their instruments. While specialists worldwide trust Littman stethoscopes, general practitioners use them for routine physical exams as well.

3M?s Littman stethoscopes are highly regarded for their accuracy, dependability, and comfort for both the doctor and the patient. There are a number of models available that are designed for use in a variety of settings, from the operating room to the pediatrician?s office.

It’s 11:30 a.m. You’re in an important meeting. Your stomach
growls so loud that the speaker pauses to see just where that
noise came from.

You feel like crawling under the table.

You’re trying to concentrate, but you feel weak. Unable to keep
your mind on your work. You’re antsy. All you can think about
is lunch.

Everyone piles down to the restaurant. You are so starving, you
order the bacon cheeseburger with fries. And they have this
great white chocolate cheesecake. Gotta try that!

Back to the meetings. An hour later, you can barely hold your
eyes open.

Have you had too many days like that?

Here’s a great formula for getting through the marathon days in
top shape-

The night before a big day, eat -

* Spaghetti with tomato sauce

* Tossed salad

* Bread

* Lots of fluids (preferably water)

* And get enough sleep.

For breakfast, eat-

* Cereal with 2% milk

* Banana

* Low Fat Yogurt

* Juice

If possible, grab some fruit or a power bar to eat during the
morning break. Drink water throughout the day.

You’ll be fine until lunch, and beyond.

At lunch, top choice is turkey and cheese on wheat and some
fruit. If that’s not available, have a salad with chicken and
cheese, like a cobb salad, or a chicken ceasar salad, and a
piece of bread. Drink lots of water. At least one glass every
2 hours.

You’ll run circles around the rest of them!

Yes, I hear all you “no carb” people screaming. Carbs are energy.
If you have high energy requirements, you must have carbs.
We all need carbs. You just have to be smart about the carbs you
eat, and when you eat them. You can learn more about it when
you read “I’ve Got a Thin Attitude.”

Besides, Atkins died, allegedly from the side effects of his own diet.

Disclaimer- If you are already a diabetic, please follow your
doctors guidelines.

Carole is the author of Getting a Thin Attitude. If you want to learn more about eating to look and feel great, and

Tooth whitening is the procedure for whitening the tooth crown that you see in the mouth, but what is really targeted is the enamel of the crown, the hardest substance in the human body that quickly gets discoloured if not kept clean always.

Most tooth whitening range of dental products work effectively to achieve whiter teeth, which is why more dentist use tooth whitening system all over the world more than ever before now. And to make tooth whitening more interesting, tooth whitening systems can now be used both at home or office.

Teeth are really a living part of the body. They have blood vessels and nerves. Teeth are enriched with lots of calcium. People who drink lots of milk or take calcium supplements have strong bones and teeth which are easier to maintain. It won’t surprise me if you are unaware that most of the tooth whitening syringe delivered take-home bleaching gel are approved as convenient replacements to previous burdensome bleaching procedures that lacked the sticky adhesive properties necessary to achieve optimum result.

There are tooth whitening products today that work whitening miracles in days instead of weeks. Carbamide peroxide is the main ingredient in most tooth whitening formula, which has both potassum nitrate and fluoride that prevent tooth sensitivity providing safety of very high standard.

Some times some tooth whitening products can be seen to show small bubbles; this does not mean that the product has been activated already as a result of peroxide decomposition. The bubbles are simply there due to the nature of its formulation. Most products’ catalogue pictures show these small bubbles even though pictures are, more often than not, taken from out of production line stock.

Further more, it is not an a defect if a dark purple coloration should appear in tray with bleaching in relation to other amalgams. This is quite inconsequential as has been proven for many years now in clinical use, which has never shown any adverse side effect on amalgam restorations. Experts think that Zink present in old amalgams cause the discoloration.

Because of the modification of anatomy in relation to oxidation that eliminates dark intra-dental organic dyes, conjugated double bonds of colour occur in different colour absorbing molecules. What really happens when bleaching takes place is that tooth sating molecules are changed to alcohols and terminal arboxylic acids which eats up light absorbing conjugated bonds that are really not cells but unwanted dye in dentin and enamel of teeth.

This is why it is quite difficult to bleach the cervical portion of the tooth than the incised edge. Reason is that enamel is thinner than gingival so the dentin responds to bleaching easier than the enamel, yet the dentin takes longer to bleach in comparison to the enamel of the incised third.

A study carried out at the University of Texas(Barghi N, Morgan J. Reducing the Adverse Effect of Bleaching on Composite Enamel Bond. Journal of Esthetic Dentistry, 1994, Volume 6, Issue 4; 157-161) shows that in pinch, one could bond immediately after bleaching using up to 35% carbamide peroxide with a mixture of A & B acetone specially made for dentin bonding.

Now you may want to know at what age should one be considered mature enough for teeth bleaching. Well, little is yet published on children’s teeth whitening or the whitening of primary dentition. But a University of North Carolina study indicates that no one will respond to bleaching with adverse site effect in terms of sensitivity because of age.

However, let it be a recommendation that to ensure thorough all level whitening, all teeth should have erupted before bleaching is done for a child, if not teeth that erupt after bleaching will definitely have a darker shade than the bleached teeth. Also about bleaching already restored tooth, it is advisable that the composite restoration be left intact during bleaching and replace it after bleaching. This should be done at least two weeks after bleaching to ensure that the shade of the whitened teeth has stabilised after peroxide has diffused out of the teeth to allow for better bonding.

Why are these illnesses on the rise? And why do some people become so ill through these illnesses, they can find it hard to function?

Well they sure don?t happen overnight! You don?t suddenly wake up one morning and feel stressed or depressed. It?s not like flicking on a light switch! And by the same rule, if you?re suffering, you can?t just wake up one morning, flick off the switch and say ?Great, I?m better now.?

Many people who don?t suffer from these illnesses often say to sufferers:

?Come on, snap out of it.?

If only it was so easy! Should anyone say this to you, please forgive them as it?s just a lack of understanding. It?s very hard for people to understand how you?re feeling if they haven?t been there.

The fact that these illnesses don?t suddenly happen means we can draw some parallels with illnesses such as heart diseases, some cancers and strokes.

Because these illnesses don?t just suddenly happen either.

If we look at heart disease, it?s often the result of damaging behaviors practised over many years. Behaviors such as smoking, lack of exercise and a diet high in saturated fat. Strokes are a result of similar behaviors and cancers too, particularly heavy smoking and drinking as you know.

So how do stressful illnesses such as stress, depression and anxiety compare?

Stress is also the product of harmful mental habits and behaviors. These habits and behaviors are developed and practised over years ? since childhood in most cases. These are the mental processes that enable us to make sense of our lives and the circumstances we?re faced with. When we reach adulthood, we perform them automatically because we?ve learned these behaviors by repetition.

Think of it like learning to drive a car. Initially, the skills required to control the vehicle needed conscious thought. It seemed really difficult didn?t it? But once we?ve performed them for sufficient periods, we drive on auto-pilot. We?ve mastered the required skills by repetition.

Here?s the key: if we eat healthy food, take regular exercise, cut out harmful behaviors such as smoking and drinking, we improve our health and drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and strokes. We are repeating good habits, habits that will give our physical well being a huge boost.

It?s exactly the same for stress. What?s important to understand is that not everyone becomes stressed or depressed ? even when tragic and traumatic circumstances happen to them. Just like people who lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid harmful habits and behaviors, people don?t become stressed or depressed because they have learned effective habits and behaviors that prevent stress from arising.

This is very good news if you suffer from these illnesses. Because just as we can learn habits and behaviors which cause us to become highly-stressed, depressed or anxious, we can learn the habits and behaviors which stop these terrible illnesses in their tracks. And the more often we make use of them, we?ll soon begin to perform them automatically and our mental health will benefit enormously.

No more feeling stressed out. No more feeling unable to cope. No more anxiety and no more depression. EVER.

I?m living proof of this. For 5 years, a series of traumatic events sent me spiralling into an anxiety-induced depression nightmare. I came out of it by learning the natural skills that starve these illnesses. The more I used them, the less anxious I became. They?re now as natural to me as driving a car, and I?ve completely eradicated anxiety and depression from my life.

You can do it too.

In our last article on depression we discussed the need to: 1) Work on your self image; 2) Work on creating a good social life; and 3) Find the core problem and work to correct it. This article is the first of three on dealing with your self image. At first I thought to do it in one article, but that would be impossible.

About your self image you might say, ?I?m depressed, not ugly. What does depression have to do with my self image?? I would remind you that we are talking about the roots of the problem of depression, not the outgrowth. If you are feeling alone, if you are not connecting with the right people, or if you are not striving for what you want anymore, it?s very likely that you have given up because you think that you can?t do it. That?s where the self image comes in. Your self image is one of a person who has been defeated, (like the dog in our first article) but the truth is that is not who you are. Think for a moment. Who do you think you are? What makes you feel good about yourself?

If you are anything like me or several other people in western society; it will be helpful to look at your past experiences with family, friends, and in school, to answer this question. Let?s explore what it was like when you started school. School is an institution that shapes your self image, and helps you decide who you are in the world. Other institutions do, but school is one whose affects follow you for many years?probably a lifetime.

I remember when I went to school. I was much younger than anyone else. I was born late in the year, skipped kindergarten, and went straight to first grade. I wasn?t used to, or interested in, being there. I remember working on workbooks matching pictures with words. We would write our answers on green pieces of paper with very wide spaces between the lines, print our names on top, and then pass them in. I remember getting a paper back once with a big golden star on the top, and with a one hundred and excellent written on it. I smiled. It made me feel good. I also noticed someone next to me with a paper with a big red ?F? on their paper, circled. We used to call them flagpoles.

At that time I didn?t know what it was. As time went on we learned that people with ?F?s were stupid. The ones with the ?A?s and the stars were smarter and better. We also learned, eventually, that it was all right to make fun of the people with the ?F?s. When they got angry for being made fun of and started fights, we learned that stupid, violent, people often got the ?F?s. The attacks just confirmed it. So a lot of my esteem was based on how I performed. If I could remember what the teacher told me and parrot it back better than anyone else, I was a good person.

When it came to playing sports, I discovered that it was the same. If I could perform better, people liked me, and patted me on the back. If I missed the ball too many times, people seemed to hate me. This is a very simple example of what happens during our lives. We are often judged on how we perform. It happens so much that we internalize these judgments. We begin to base our worth and value, our self esteem, on how well we perform. If we cannot perform as well as we like, we consider ourselves worthless failures, on a subconscious level. After that we withdraw from a world that we aren?t worthy of, and give up on our hopes, dreams and goals until we end up with nothing. This having nothing, especially no hope, is depression.

It is horrible to be depressed, but one thing that depression does is bring us to a state where we can look at the world and see that a lot of the things that we have learned most of our lives just aren?t true. We have all been sold a dead elephant that we can?t talk about, and we have learned to keep beating on that dead elephant trying to get it to move. This realization is dangerous if we do not take it a step farther and realize that not being able to conform to the lie is what is causing us grief. This realization is a launching pad for another realization that will bring us a happy, more fulfilling life: How we perform is not most important, how we are is.

Are you working from a strategy of performing, or being? The artist is an artist whether he can paint like Picasso or not, because something inside of him cries out to express his inner beauty through painting. If he ignores it and becomes a computer programmer, that part of him is still fighting to be fulfilled. Your depression may just be the part of you that needs to be expressed. The practical thing that comes out of this article: judge yourself and your worth based on how you are, not on what you can do. Begin to do the things for which you have been called. This is the first step at dealing with depression. Do your life calling.

There are thousands of books available that can help you do the inner work, unfortunately some are much better than others. I would suggest that you purchase one after reading these articles on self esteem, but if you would like to purchase one now please explore my website for recommendations and other articles. I look forward to talking with you in the next article. In the meantime begin to do what your heart is telling you, even if it is in your own closet. You might be surprised at how your mood lightens, and how you will look forward to getting better at what you?ve always wanted to do, one day at a time.

While I applaud the efforts of the fast food industry in attempting to provide vegetarian and more healthful alternatives to the crap they already sell on a daily basis, I have to point out shortcomings and defects in their attempts to provide vegetarian and healthy alternatives that sabotage or defeat the whole purpose of attempting to provide healthier and meat-less (vegetarian) products.

Is health or the wellbeing of the American people the main objective in selling vegetarian products or is it financial gain? Unfortunately for all the people who want to believe the fast food industry is coming around and becoming more health conscious, the fast food industry?s objective in selling vegetarian items such as the veggie burger is strictly commercial, at least right now or presently.

Why? Because until the vegetarian items are completely lacking animal byproducts, the promoting and selling of vegetarian items is to deceive fast food consumers into believing that they have a choice in eating meatless or healthier items and products, which just isn?t true

.
Take McDonald?s, Burger King, and the Habit for example. They all sell a veggie burger. But that veggie burger patty (if the patty itself is not entirely vegetable based) is cooked in ANIMAL LARD number one, and number two, cooked on the same grill that meat (DEAD ANIMAL FLESH) is cooked on.

All meat contains parasites and worms, and the ugliest ones that you could ever see with the human eyes. I know this personally as I have done the personal research (and have been presented research from Doctah B, Bro. Tarik, and others in the Los Angeles area) and have the nauseating photographs to show you. TOTALLY GROSS!

Some people thought they were avoiding animal byproducts by only eating French fries from the fast food restaurant, not knowing that most fast food restaurants such as McDonald?s were cooking their fries in vegetable oil mixed with beef juice. That?s right! McDonald?s add beef juice to its cooking oil for flavor, in addition to spraying the fires with a sugar solution, freezing them and shipping them off to McDonald?s franchises, and after cooking the sugar sprayed fries in beef juice (oil), sodium chloride (salt) is added and you have one of the most addictive products in America ? McDonald?s French fries!

Take Subway for example, a place I used to eat at often in my early vegan days and while I was in the Corporate world. I had my places to eat at and menus to choose from. However, eating out was the exception to the rule and not the rule, as I normally prepared my own lunch. But Subway was right across the street from my place of employment and the food was much lighter than the stuff sold at the more general fast food establishments.

However, as I became more spiritual and health conscious, it started to bother me eating at establishments that served vegetarian products alongside with meat or flesh products. I used to order the Veggie Max sub sandwich from Subway. But the soy based Veggie Max patty was in a container or bin next to bacon (pig?s back end). This was not a far distance for the microscopic parasites and worms to crawl from the bacon bin to the veggie patty bin. Also, the veggie patty was cut in two with the same knife used to cut meat with. You see, it really doesn?t matter if you?re health conscious or vegan or vegetarian and the person preparing your food (or product) is not. To the fast food employee, they?re just preparing another product totally oblivious to strict food sanitary preparation ethics and principles.

Another thing to point out about the Subway Veggie Max sub or sandwich is that it was (1) cooked (actually, RADIATED) in a microwave oven, (2) cooked or radiated in the same microwave oven as meat or flesh products (pork worms can?t be killed in heat because of a heat-resistant shell that forms around the worm in very high temperatures, and the only substance that can penetrate or break open that shell is the hydrochloric acid of the human body).

One day while out on the town with my children here in Glendale, California, my daughter wanted some noodles or Chow Mein and I think some vegetable-fried rice or egg rolls from Panda Express, I really can?t remember exactly the items, but I do remember asking the Panda Express employee to prepare an exclusively vegetarian plate ? NO MEAT OR MEAT-BYPRODUCTS WHATSOEVER, i.e. vegetable-fried rice, Chow Mein, steamed vegetables, and to my utter shock, the employee honestly told me that NOTHING at Panda Express was vegetarian. Absolutely nothing! I said, ?Even the vegetable-fried rice, noodles, and steamed vegetables?? He said ?That?s right, Sir!? With a discombobulated look on my face, the employee then told me that Panda Express pours chicken juice on all of its items. So now I?m thinking about the time when time compelled me to get something on the go and I got what I thought was completely vegetarian from Panda Express.

And of course, I?ve heard similar accounts from my good Vegan comrades as well. So if you want to know a thing, ask. And by all means, don?t presume.

If you think those vegetarian corn dogs at Hot Dog On-A-Stick are vegetarian, think again! They contain egg whites (in the bread batter).

I also used to eat the vegetarian burritos at Baha Fresh Mexican Grill. I started getting headaches. Why? White flour tortillas cooked on the same grill as the slaughtered flesh (meat). So what did I do to cure the problem? I Left those burritos alone and I have been fine ever since.

I remember my early vegan days of 1997 and 1998 and thinking I was not eating any animal parts or byproducts whatsoever only to discover that those black beans I was eating from El Pollo Loco contained chunks of chicken. One day while eating these black beans, I noticed a strange substance in them. When I picked the substance up and closely analyzed it, I was disgusted to be holding a piece of chicken in my hand. Boy did I feel nauseated at this revelation and discovery. I had to let those beans go no matter how good they tasted. I refuse to let taste disillusion me into a state of poor health and into an early grave.

Vegetarian does not mean vegan! Vegan means ?completely animal free, including dairy products and eggs,? whereas vegetarian means ?meat-free but not dairy/eggs-free.? A vegetarian burrito at a fast food restaurant may contain cheese and sour cream (congealed cow snot or mucus). Some veggie burger patties may also contain cheese. Cheese is from an animal so how can it be animal free? While many health conscious folks and would be vegans enjoy Boca Burgers, some brands contain egg whites and cheese, so start reading the ingredient list on the box.

So although McDonald?s now has a veggie burger, just know that its veggie burger is cooked in beef oil, in addition to the fact that the veggie burger is centered between two white, refined grain buns, conventionally grown iceberg lettuce (the worst lettuce to eat and the most nutritionally deficient plant to eat) and genetically engineered tomatoes (if you want lettuce and tomatoes on your veggie burger). The same thing can be said of Burger King and the Habit?s veggie burgers.

However, if you?re on the road or out and about in society and must make a choice to eat something that is not so insalubrious, it would be a good idea to experience around with a major fast food chain?s veggie burger rather than give in to the traditional crap that has been served over the years and that you always bought and ate. However, it is better (and wiser) to seek out vegan restaurants before you actually hit the town (if you?re a health conscious individual or vegan).

I know how difficult it is to be vegan (at first) and to not have vegan eateries so easily and readily accessible, especially if you live in a small town. I?m thankful that the Greater Los Angeles area and Southern California in general is loaded with vegan spots around town to get something wholesome and nutritious to eat. The same is true for other big cities around the nation such as New York City, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco-Oakland Bay area, etc.

If you?re having trouble locating vegan eateries around the nation, contact Friends of Animals at bill@friendsofanimals.org or (203)656-1522 for a possible listing of vegan restaurants.

If you?re in the Greater Los Angeles area, you may contact us at www.DHERBS.com for a listing of vegan (and vegetarian) restaurants.

Eating healthy is a journey, discipline, and lifestyle and does not come without challenges in the early stages. However, as you become more health conscious, you?ll discover more healthy places to eat at while out on the town.

Thank you for reading! PEACE, LOVE and LIGHT!

“I would exercise, if I could just find the time!” If you have ever found yourself uttering a phrase similar to this one, keep reading.

Most people say the number one reason they do not get regular exercise is lack of time. It makes sense. The world we live in today runs at a much faster pace than it did 50 years ago. Interestingly, though, consider that as the pace of our society accelerated, the incidence of obesity was simultaneously on the rise.

So what has changed in the last 50 years? In today?s world, we have more obligations, responsibilities and distractions than the generations that came before us did. Statistically, we spend more hours at work, in front of the television and using the computer than people did 50 years ago. We also have more leisure activities and the means to enjoy them.

Indeed, we have the same amount of hours in each day as we did 50 years ago. The difference is, we just choose to use them differently. Our children spend their afternoons playing video games instead of playing outside. As adults, we have replaced active, calorie burning time with computer and TV time. Not only do we have hundreds of television channels to choose from, we don?t even have to get off the couch to flip through them anymore.

So in this hurry-up, internet-surfing world that we live in now, how do we find the time to exercise? Each of us has only 24 hours in each day. No more, no less. In order to exercise for 30 minutes a day, you must take a 30 minute block of time from the 24 hours you start with.

You see, it is not about finding the time to exercise. It is about making the time.

We make time for important appointments like the doctor, a haircut, or parent-teacher night. Why not schedule yourself an appointment for exercise? Block off the time, in writing, so that something does not come along to take its place. In reality, what you are doing is assigning exercise a high priority by putting it on the same level as your other appointments that you don?t intend to miss.

You say you just don?t have a big block of time in your appointment book? Break up exercise in to smaller pieces. Can you walk around the field at your daughter?s soccer game, instead of just sitting in the car or on a lawn chair? Can you do a few arm curls, push-ups or sit-ups during a commercial break? Can you cut out a half hour of television three days a week and take a walk in your neighborhood instead?

Once you get into the habit of making the time to exercise, you will find that you had more flexibility in your schedule than you thought. So don?t wait for the time to find you, start now by making the time for exercise.
